All the while, a blaring chiptune soundtrack created by Chipzel helps to enhance the near trance you’re falling into. Touching anything will cause you to lose, and the only options are to rotate left or rotate right. Obstacles come at you, at first lines but increasingly larger objects that you have to squeeze your triangle past. You control a small triangle rotating around a hexagon in the middle of the screen.
What you actually do in Super Hexagon couldn’t be simpler. Hearing her over and over as you try to get into the flow and survive insane obstacles is somehow calming despite the madness. On the hardest modes, where death in seconds isn’t uncommon, her voice can take on a nearly trance-like quality. Every time Jenn Frank will calmly announce your game over, and then as you click the screen, she’ll tell you to begin. While not as fast as the downright bananas speeds, you’ll have to get used to if you want to survive for more than a couple seconds on hardestest, while getting used to the game, you’ll be dying a lot. Even on the easiest possible difficulty, death is never more than one wrong move away. There aren’t a lot of games where surviving a single minute feels like an accomplishment, but that’s the nature of Super Hexagon. Surviving 60 seconds in these modes unlock new, hyper versions of these labeled hardester, hardestest, and hardestestest. Super Hexagon doesn’t try to hide what you’re getting into, they’re labeled hard, harder, and hardest, though that’s a lie. When you start Super Hexagon, you’ll hear the nearly robotic yet perfectly pitched voice of journalist Jenn Frank and be presented with three difficulty options. Simple in its execution, perfect to play for two minutes but also fun for longer periods, incredibly hard but never unfair, and rarely frustrating it’s the rare game I wouldn’t change a single thing about. While it’s also available on PC, I’m convinced Super Hexagon is the ultimate mobile game. I’ve never even thought of removing this twitch-based sort of rhythm game from indie creator Terry Cavanagh, also known for creating VVVVVV and Dicey Dungeons. If I want something more involved, there are devices better built for that sort of experience than a phone.įor nearly ten years, though, every time I get a new phone Super Hexagon has made the cut. Most of the best mobile games are time wasters, able to fill in the brief moments of downtime we have while waiting for something else. Inevitably in the year or two since my last device, there will be a number of apps I just don’t use anymore and that I no longer want clogging up my storage. Every time I do, I look at my list of apps and decide what I still need. I like staying up to date on the latest devices. Like many people, I get a new phone every couple of years.
